Shankaracharya was a great jnana yogi who advised the five syllable mantra, for its ability to open one to the knowledge of the Self which is Siva. It takes the energy of the second house (speech, traditional study, Masters degree, etc.) to the fifth house (bhakti, mantra, yantra, tantra, intelligence). Namah Sivaya is two words and five syllables. Panch means five and akshara means syllables, so the Shiva panchakshari mantra is the five syllable Namah Sivaya mantra. There are two main mantras for Shiva a five syllable mantra (panchakshari) and six syllable mantra (shadakshari). He is the original guru as taught by Patanjali: Ishvara is Purusha, Aum is Ishvara, the teacher of the earliest Gurus. He is the source of knowledge and educates the heart and mind in the path one follows. He is the deity (or archetypal energy) that purifies our wrong doings and helps us to burn up negative karmas.

Shiva is the great purifier as well as the Adiguru (primal guru). Salutations to the glorious primal guru, Sri Adinath, who instructed the knowledge of hatha yoga which shines forth as a stairway for those who wish to ascend to the highest stage of yoga, raja yoga.
